Biography

Document Title 1Described as possessing "natural poise and ease" and a “very fine instrument” in performances that have an "immense emotional touch," Jake is a freelance singer, teacher, and vocal animateur. Born and raised in the North West of England, he took a degree in Literae Humaniores from the University of Oxford, and during his undergraduate years sang as a Choral Scholar with the Chapel Choirs of Worcester College, as well as with Schola Cantorum of Oxford. After postgraduate scholarships at Truro and Norwich Cathedrals, he is now a Lay Vicar at Chichester Cathedral, where as a gentleman of the cathedral choir he sings eight services a week, as well as for concerts, broadcasts, and tours.

As a soloist his concert credits include, J.S Bach's Matthäus-PassionJohannes-PassionMass in B Minor and Magnificat, Buxtehüde’s Membra Jesu Nostri, Handel’s Messiah, Dixit Dominus, and Theodora, Vivaldi's Gloria and Stabat Mater, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, and Mozart’s Requiem to name but a few. He has worked with ensembles such as the BBC Philharmonic, Norwich Baroque, the Amadeus Orchestra, Hastings Philharmonic, the East Anglian Academy of Early Music, the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, and the Brook Street Band. He also has a portfolio of international work, and has made appearances in Belgium, Germany, Hungary and the USA, including at the International Liszt Festival in Esztergom and headlining a concert at the Handel Week Festival in Illinois.

As a conductor, he has worked with a variety of vocal and instrumental groups including the Worcester College Chorus, the Affinity Show Choir, Cornwall Returners' Orchestra, and as Musical Director of Truro City Band. He has also conducted in concerts at Truro Cathedral as part of their acclaimed Choral Outreach Scheme. He is currently the Director of Music for the St.Richard Singers, a reputable chamber choir based in Chichester, as well as being the founder and Artistic Director of their in-house chamber orchestra, the Noviomagus Ensemble.

He is a Fellow of the London College of Music, and holds (with distinction) the Licentiate diploma of Trinity College, London.

He has studied with Colin Baldy, Patricia Rozario and Nicholas Clapton and has participated in masterclasses with Kathryn Harries, James Black, James Bowman (as part of the ‘Britten in Oxford’ centenary celebrations), Mark Rowlinson, and John Treleaven.

Jake is very passionate about education. Formerly the vocal coach in residence at New Cornwall Opera, and a Vocal Strategist for Norfolk Music Hub, he now maintains a teaching practice in the centre of Chichester, working with pupils of all ages and abilities.
